Hull Food Charter
The original Hull Food Charter was developed through wide ranging consultations with organisations, businesses and individuals working to tackle the key issues we face around food in Hull. It complemented the first Hull Food Partnership Action Plan that was written in April 2019.
In 2024 with the launch of the Hull Food Strategy and development of a new Action Plan, it is necessary to revisit and refresh the Hull Food Charter to reflect the changes in relation to food over the past 5 years. Providing a simple set of pledges that individuals and local organisations can sign up to, it sets out the ambition for good quality food in Hull for the next 5 years and is a call to action for everyone to get involved in making this a reality.
You can support these objectives as an individual or on behalf of an individual by signing up to the Hull Food Charter.
Objectives:

Well Fed
Improve health, wellbeing and life chances of everyone who lives, learns, plays and works in Hull; through promoting and increasing access to a delicious, nutritious, balanced diet that meets dietary and cultural needs.

Well Happy
Cultivate a culture celebrating and sharing food within communities which recognises the value of local, sustainable food and those who produce it.

Well Learned
Support and enhance the practical abilities of everyone to grow, cook and make good food decisions which are easy, affordable and acceptable by providing access to information, education and skills development for all ages.

Well Nurtured
Tackle food inequality and injustice by increasing awareness and availability of a range of affordable and desirable sustainable food options across Hul, enabling broad and easy access for everyone and challenging the systems that prevent people from making good food part of their life.

Well Supported
Create and nurture a vibrant and resilient local sustainable food economy in Hull by supporting and prioritising the growth and development of independent food enterprises, recognising good quality by encouraging and ensuring fairness of reward throughout the whole food chain.

Well Connected
Implement and embed sustainable food procurement practices across anchor institutions, the VCSE and private sector to generate jobs, invest in and strengthen the local economy, improving understanding of where food is sourced, produced and distributed.

Well Cultivated
Significantly increase the amount of food grown locally and made available within Hull and surrounding areas through both community food growing and sustainable farming, using practices that benefit biodiversity

Well Planet
Reduce and mitigate the ecological impact of the local food system through reducing waste, minimising unnecessary transportation using sustainable food production methods and shorter supply chains, and avoiding the use of practices that exploit people and the planet.
