Arthurs Organics is the local organic veg box scheme and also supplies Suma groceries and locally manufactured cleaning products. It has recently introduced a bulk buying scheme for groups to buy in bulk at advantageous prices

Lowna Dairy is the producer of locally made goats milk products, including cheeses of various styles, ice cream, milk and yogurt. Located on Eppleworth Road at Raywell,outside Cottingham, you can visit to purchase goods, or buy them from Grain on Newland Ave.

Chestnut Dairies Stud Farm, Seaton, Hornsea, HU11 5RJ. A established family dairy business purchasing milk from local dairy farmers. They have SALSA (Safe and Local Supplier Accreditation)  and deliver to local Sainsbury’s and bakeries.

Grain Wholefoods on Newland Ave have a good selection of wholefood,  plus cheese from local Lowna Dairy, a selection of coffee beans, and fresh bread from the local Feast Rising Bakery, if you’re early enough. Plus environment-friendly detergents ranges, including Ecover and the locally produced Bio-D products with refill facilities available. Environmentally friendly toiletries too.

Feast Rising Bakery produces a range of artisan breads, which may be purchased from the bakery (23 Arthur St (through the archway) Hull HU3 6BH, Wed to Sat 9.00 am til sold out) or from Grain, Cottingham Market or Humber Bridge Farmers Market,

Side Oven Bakery at Carr House Farm at Foston on the Wolds uses a wide range of cereals which are grown on the farm, and milled using a traditional stone ground mill. Bread and granolas can be bough on line, ordered and collected, or bought through local stockists.

Staal Smokehouse is getting a good reputation for its produce. Based in Long Riston, its goods can be ordered online or bought at various local outlets.  A range of smoked fish, plus smoked chicken, duck and rapeseed oil. Local source material includes Brandesburton trout, Thixendale rapeseed oil and Wolds chicken.

Alans Naturally and Alans Fruiterers These are next door to each other on South Street, Hull. Alans Naturally has a large range of nuts, dried fruit, seeds, beans and pulses, plus rice and organic flour, all unpackaged and available in quantities of your choice weighed out into paper bags. Next door is a traditional greengrocers in the heart of town.

Herby’s delicatessen and caterers is a local family-run business striving to provide the best locally sourced fresh food. Shops in Princes Quay and on Holderness Road.

Trinity Market, Market Place, Hull  The Food Hall has fish stalls, butchers stalls, fruit and veg and deli produce. Fresh food at competitive prices, with packaging at a minimum. One World Shop sells Fairtrade food and drink (most of the Traidcraft Range) and craft and gift items. The shop is located on Waltham St in Hull, between Albion St car park and British Home Stores.  Restocked and rearranged under new management, it now has a website

Chilli Devil Sauces   A range of Chilli sauces in various styles and strengths, and cook-in sauces including Jambalaya, Spicy Mexican, Aromatic Chilli (mild) and Hot Smokey Chilli. All locally made by Ian Ibbetson, and can be ordered online or bought through suppliers listed on the website

VKP Preserves This Hull-based family firm produces jams, marmalades and chutneys which are hand made in small batches using fresh ingredients, locally sourced where possible. The products can be found at several of the local Farmers’ markets. Hampers can be ordered.

Beverley Maru Market is a home delivery scheme designed to bring you local, top quality produce and to help small independent traders extend their markets.

Sewells On The Go These petrol station retail outlets are part of the Sewell Group, Wherever possible, they partner up with local suppliers and stock shelves with local produce. An example is the stocking of a full range of bottled beers from a local brewery, Wold Top Yorkshire Brewery.

Pickering Road Community Orchard, The orchard was opened in 2004 with grants from the National Lottery, Hull City Council and the NHS Trust. Harvest is usually mid August to October with open days throughout. For a donation of £2, depending on the harvest, you can help yourself to 2kg – 4kg of the apples of your choice. You can have them whole, juiced or pressed.


Southwood Farm Shop and Nurseries, Ganton Ave, Cottingham, HU16 2HGT. This outlet does not offer organic produce but labels the country of origin of all its fresh produce, including the ones which are grown on site, with minimum use of pesticide eg potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbages. They also stock free range eggs, a small selection of meats and cheeses sourced from the region, plus Suma wholefoods.

Slater Organics at Rise is a local family-run company growing organic produce in the lovely walled garden at Rise in Holderness. They supply produce for Arthur Street Trading, Produce can also be purchased direct from the garden.

Foston Nurseries  Jenny Webb at Foston is an organic producer of vegetables, These can be bought at the farm, delivered or purchased at farmers markets. Certified organic by The Soil Association.

Barmston Organics runs an organic farm shop located at Allison Lane End Farm, Lissett, Driffield, YO26 8PS (01262 468128) The shop is run by Colleen and Tony Hunt, who organically farm 270 acres at Elm Tree Farm, Barmston, near Bridlington YO25 8PQ They produce vegetables, cereals, beef from their own herd of cattle, and lamb from the farm’s flock.The Farm Shop is open Tues-Sat from 9.30am to 6pm. Scarborough Shearling  This is a Community Supported Agriculture scheme which allows you to buy top quality lamb from the North York Moors. The scheme involves picking up the lamb on a monthly basis from Scarborough. For more details on the CAS see
