Hull Food Strategy

“Well Fed? A Food Strategy for Hull 2024 – 2029” was created by Hull Food Partnership during an extended consultation period that ran from 2021-2024.

It is the culmination of almost three years of work undertaken with anchor institutions, businesses, organisations of all sizes and residents to understand what is happening in relation to food in Hull and how everyone can play a part in transforming our food system.

The strategy sets out what needs to be done to address the challenges faced by Hull in relation to how food is produced, traded and consumed, and the wider impacts it has on society and individuals.

At the heart of the Hull Food Strategy is an overarching vision:

“To make Hull a place where everyone is able to enjoy nutritious food that is fairly produced, supports the local economy and is readily available to everyone, regardless of background, ability or income”.

Wide consultation across the city asked what food issues were most important to people and organisations in Hull, and what steps should be taken to change and improve our local food system. Over 1,000 responses were received which helped to shape the strategy.

The development of the strategy was led by Hull Food Partnership, with support from Hull City Council. Hull Food Partnership is supported by a multi sector steering group and is hosted by Hull Council for Voluntary Services (Hull CVS).  The Hull Health and Well Being Board will provide ongoing strategic oversight of the action planning, implementation and review phases of the Food Strategy.

The strategy is framed around the Sustainable Food Places Six Key Issues which are a recognised framework for developing good food systems nationally and provide a focus for a wide range of sectors and organisations to engage with the action planning and implementation of the strategy.

Sustainable Food Places Six Key Issues:

  • Strategic and collaborative approach to good food governance and action
  • Building public awareness, active food citizenship and local good food movement
  • Tackling food poverty and diet related ill-health and increasing access to affordable healthy food
  • Creating a vibrant, prosperous and diverse sustainable food economy
  • Transforming catering and procurement and revitalising local and sustainable food supply chains
  • Tackling the climate and nature emergency through sustainable food and farming and an end to food waste

Over the course of 2024-2025, Hull Food Partnership continues to work with stakeholders to develop a city-wide, multi-sector action plan to take forward the Hull Food Strategy, building on what good practice is already in place, and identifying what practical steps can be taken by all stakeholders to take forward the priority actions identified in the strategy.

The input of all those who have contributed to the development of the strategy is very much appreciated, and moving forward into developing the action plan and implementation, it will be crucial to have the continued participation of all stakeholders, of all sizes, all sectors, and all communities.

In 2029, the Hull Food Strategy will be refreshed in light of what has happened over the previous five years, and alongside this, a new action plan will be developed to take into account the new food landscape and priorities for Hull.
